October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

For over 20 years, October has been known as Cybersecurity Awareness Month! During this time, organizations such as the U.S. Critical Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and National Cybersecurity Alliance make a proactive effort to promote awareness of IT security issues which affect us all in today's interconnected world!

At Triumvirate Cybersecurity, we'll also be observing Cybersecurity Awareness Month by sharing tips and information each week aligned with the key themes identified by CISA and the National Cybersecurity Alliance.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month Topics

This year, Cybersecurity Awareness month seeks to inform people about some of the most effective ways to prevent successful cyberattacks! Each week, we'll share a post on one of the following topics:

  1. Using Strong Passwords: Passwords and passphrases are the cornerstone of protecting your digital identity! By ensuring your passwords are strong and unique for each account, you can make it harder for hackers to access your information and leapfrog from one account to another. Using a password manager can make generating and using strong passwords much less of a burden! 🔣

  2. Enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Multi-factor authentication (also called "two-factor authentication") involves an additional step in the digital authentication process beyond entering just a username and password. You're probably familiar with some of the most common methods, like text message codes and authenticator app notifications, but there are other options as well! Regardless of which you use, enabling MFA makes it significantly harder for hackers to access your information—even if they have your password! 🔐

  3. Regularly Updating Software: Computer software and operating systems are under a constant barrage of testing by both security researchers and threat actors trying to identify technical vulnerabilities which can be used to bypass protections or yield unintended outcomes. Reputable software vendors will regularly release patches to resolve identified issues, reducing the likelihood of an attacker successfully exploiting existing vulnerabilities! By patching your system regularly, you can reduce your "attack surface" by limiting the number of ways bad guys can get in! 🩹

  4. Identifying Social Engineering: Phishing emails and text messages are so commonplace these days, that you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't know anyone that has fallen victim to social engineering in one way or another! As artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) have increased in popularity, attackers have started using them to craft sophisticated social engineering campaigns. Whether they're targeting your company account password, your banking info, or something else, there are some common red flags that can help you identify when someone is trying to phish for your information! 🎣

Watch for Updates!

As mentioned, we'll be doing a post each week on one of these crucial topics to help you be more cyber-secure! In the meantime, you can check out CISA's Cybersecurity Awareness Month primer entitled Nine Ways to Stay Safe Online!

If you're in the Dayton area, you can also join us on October 30th for our CMMC Spooktacular at the UDRI Digital Transformation Center where we'll discuss the most recent updates and answer questions. We hope to see you there! 👻
